Joy of Sets #002 - Music Sheet Background

Hello Crafty Friends,

 

Its challenge time over at Joy of Sets Blog Challenge. This fortnight's challenge requires participants to use a current or retired Stampin'Up! stamp set with the letter S in the stamp's title. eg Colourful Seasons, Swan Lake etc.

Today's card uses one of the new background stamps - Music Sheet. I wanted to create a soft, feminine card for a music loving lady.

 

The Music Sheet Background stamp was inked using Black Momento and stamped onto Whisper White card stock. This was then placed onto a layer of Powder Pink and then a layer of Whisper White before being attached to a Thick Whisper White Card base.

The Floral image from Birthday Blooms was heat embossed in silver on Shimmery White card stock, and coloured using and aqua painter with Powder Pink, Smoky Slate and Soft Sky inks. The fussy cut image was adhered to the card front with dimensionals. 

The sentiment "Best Wishes" from  the Blooms & Wishes stamp set, was white heat embossed on black card stock and then mounted to some Powder Pink and adhered with Tombow.

While I had the stamp out I made another card. The rainbow background and sentiment from Pocketful of Sunshine had me singing. I will share the details in tomorrow's post.

More Swaps Birthday Blooms

Welcome to my blog crafty friends.

 

I made and took a few different designs to swap at the SU April 2017 Perth Convention. I adore the Birthday Blooms stamp set and couldn't resist making a few different cards using the same stamp. To not complicate things too much for my first Onstage swapping experience I also decided to make quite a few of the cards using the Mediterranean Moments stamp set and neutral coloured cardstock.

 

 

Plus I also made 10 of these Poppin Box Cards.

 

Here is a close up of three of the cards I haven't shown on my blog previously and were only designed a few weeks prior to Onstage (the Med Moments cards I designed a few months ago and details for those cards can be found in an earlier post)

 

 

This card has a Whisper White Card base and then a layer of black and a layer of pink pirouette card stock. I have used the Happy Hearts TIEF and the Hello sentiment from Pop of Paradise. I have stamped the Birthday Blooms image using Archival Black Ink onto Shimmery White card and then water coloured using an Aqua Painter with Pink Pirouette, Old Olive and Cucumber Crush inks. I added a leaf die cut in Pink Pirouette using the Botanical Builders Framelits.

 

 

I did a few in Island Indigo and Wisteria Wonder because well not everyone loves pink like I do. The Layering Squares Framelits were used to cut the frame in Wisteria Wonder and the hole in the Whisper White card front. I adhered this with foam strips to a layer of Island Indigo that was attached to a Whisper White card base. The Birthday Blooms flower image was stamped in Archival Black ink and water coloured using an Aqua Painter with Island Indigo, Wisteria Wonder and Old Olive inks. The sentiment Best Wishes is from the Bloom & Wishes stamp set and the background splashes in Island Indigo ink are made using the Timeless Textures stamps.

And then I just couldn't stop using this stamp set so made these So Saffron ones with some added stitching from the trusty sewing machine

 

I have used So Saffron, Whisper White and Sahara Sand card stock. The Sahara Sand layer was sewed using white cotton and then embossed using the Hexagons TIEF. I then sewed the doily before adding the Birthday Blooms image which was water coloured and fussy cut. I coloured using So Saffron, Daffodil Delight and Crumb Cake inks. The sentiment is from Teeny Tiny Sentiments stamp set and was heat embossed in white powder on black card stock and tucked under the flower image.

 

And these are the swaps I brought home!

 

Omg!!!!! Cards, Card Fronts, Bookmarks, Gift Tags, Magnets, Keychains, Bags of Lollies, Chocolates, Tea Bags, Coffee, Mints, Badge, Affirmation Bottle, Scissor Charms, Tea Light Candles, Easter Eggs & Chapstick!!!! The diversity was astonishing and the talent displayed in all the creations I revived was absolutely amazing! 

Convention Swaps

As mentioned in an earlier post, I made over 100 swaps for the Perth Onstage event. I did not make just one design lol. I made 7 because I knew everyone has different taste when it comes to colours etc. Here is one of the seven designs. I made 10 full cards as part of my swaps. This is the Poppin Box Card -box and wrap tutorial by Gemma Clarke.

 

And here is a picture of all angles of the box, wrap and belly band.

 

As you can see I used a few different bundles to decorate the box.  I took the colour inspiration from the DSP I was using so that it was easier to coordinate. I used the Cupcakes & Carousels DSP, Whisper White, Black, So Saffron and Bermuda Bay Cardstock with a few teeny bits of Vellum. I used Archival Black ink for most of the stamped images, with the addition of So Saffron and Bermuda Bay inks for colouring the hot air balloon, sponging the inside card, flowers in the jar etc.

I made five in each colour card base - So Saffron & Bermuda Bay and decorated with a piece of DSP that covered the front third of the card. 

 

To decorate the belly band, I cut strips of Cardstock and attached to the middle before using the Layering Circles Framelits to make 3 circles in white, So Saffron and Bermuda Bay before using a 4th circle to cut DSP from the Cupcakes & Carousels DSP Stack.

The For You sentiment is from the Jar of Love Bundle and was heat embossed in white powder on Bermuda Bay card stock.

I made the little tassels as I felt the fronts were a tad too plain. Using scraps of So Saffron and Bermuda Bay I ruled a small line down from the top edge of my strip of Cardstock and using scissors cut lines upto the pencil mark. 

 

Then just add a loop of Bakers Twine at the beginning of the strip of Cardstock and start rolling. I used Tombow to secure the Bakers Twine and to close up the rolled tassel. Let dry then attach a small thin strip of silver foil Cardstock around the top. 

 

I stamped the inside with two sentiments and the carousel image from the Carousel Birthday Stamp Set using archival black ink and then using sponges I lightly sponged So Saffron and Bermuda Bay ink.

 

Four sides of the box were decorated using the Layering Squares Framelits to cut perfect squares from the DSP. The Layering Circles Framelits were used to cut two of each colour in So Saffron & Bermuda Bay to place over the DSP before decorating further.

 

 

Each side has a different image/bundle used to decorate over the DSP and Layering Circle. This side uses the Beautiful You stamp set and the T Shirt Builder Bundle. The lady image was paper pieced using DSP from the same Paper Stack. Her hat was coloured using So Saffron Marker. Sentiment is from the Sprinkles of Life stamp set.  I also used the triple banner punch to make the little banner behind the Tee.

 

The Love Notes bundle was used for this side with the envelope cut in Vellum. The heart die was cut in black card stock and the note card was stamped in Bermuda Bay for the hearts and Archival Black for the Happy Birthday. The little sentiment is from the Sprinkles of Life stamp set.

 

Up & Away Bundle for this side. Images were stamped in Archival Black on Shimmery White cardstock and coloured in using an Aqua Painter with So Saffron and Bermuda Bay inks. I had to add a little white die cut cloud too just because lol

 

And the Jar of Love bundle on this side. I did die cut a piece of vellum and put it over the stamped jar image so it looked more like glassware. The sentiment is from the Blooms & Wishes stamp set, which was heat embossed in white powder onto black card stock.

 

If you received one at Onstage hope you liked it - I could only give away 9 of them as I forgot I had to pop one on the SU Swaps Display Board.

 

Birthday Blooms

I have a new favourite stamp set, which to be honest I didn't really gravitate to when the Annual Catalogue came out many moons ago. But as my desire to colour more has grown I am finding the stamps that require colouring in are on my favourites list at the moment.

The image on the card above has been stamped in Archival Black on Sahara Sand card stock and coloured using an Aqua Painter and White Craft Ink.  Many layers of white ink were applied to achieve the depth I wanted. The sentiment from the Tin of Cards was white heat embossed on black card stock and tucked in behind the stamped flower image before adhering to card front. a few accessories were added in the same colour scheme and adhered to a whisper white card base.

 

This card was the inspiration for one of my card swaps at the April Stampin 'Up! Convention. As the sequins are retired I did have to alter it slightly.

 

I started with a whisper white card base, added a layer of Island Indigo and then put aside while I worked on the flower. Using Shimmery white cardstock I stamped the large flower from Birthday Blooms with Archival Black and coloured using an Aqua Painter and Island Indigo, Wisteria Wonder and Old Olive Inks.

 

On Whisper White the sentiment Best Wishes from Blooms and Wishes stamp set was stamped in the lower right corner before using the Layering Squares Framelits to cut a square in the centre. Using the next size up Square die and the larger scalloped edge die I cut a frame from Wisteria Wonder cardstock and adhered using Tombow. The Whisper White cardstock was then adhered to the Island Indigo card front with foam strips and then the flower attached using Tombow and Dimensionals.

 

I am off to create ten of these beauties to swap with other crafty Stampin' Up! Demo's. Back soon with a few more cards using this stamp set. Until then,

Home Sweet Home

The Sweet Home bundle makes the cutest 3D houses and just as cute cards. I recently had new neighbours move in so decided to welcome them to the neighbourhood with a card using this bundle.

On a Whisper White card base I stamped the flowers and foliage from the Blooms and Wishes stamp set, in Flirty Flamingo, Sweet Sugar Plum and Pink Pirouette. Let it dry - use heat tool if need be. If you don't let the ink from the stamping dry the next stage won't be overly successful (trust me I learn these things the hard way lol). Next heat emboss one of the leaf stamps in gold embossing powder - ensure you use your static powder/embossing buddy so you don't get the embossing where you don't want it.

Then I stamped the house from the Home Sweet Home set in Flirty Flamingo using Melon Mambo for the roof and door accents. The sentiment was also stamped in Melon Mambo. Use the door Die to make the cut for the front door. Adhere this to a piece of Whisper White that has been embossed using the Large Polka Dot Embossing Folder and backed with Crumb Cake card stock. Now simply adhere to card front using dimensionals/foam dots and add some bling for the door handle.

 

Shutter Card

I was on a roll today and made quite a few moving parts cards. I hadn't made a shutter card in quite a while and found it fun and the easy compared to the other cards I was attempting in today's  mad crafting session.

I wanted to make a card using the sentiment "Happy Birthday, Gorgeous" from the Beautiful You stamp set.

 

What better way to highlight a sentiment than to make a Shutter Card.

 

 

Tutorials for this type of card are all over the internet and it would be far easier you follow a video tutorial than me try to explain it with photos.

 

I have used the following card stock: Black for the base, camera mechanism and inside panel. Whisper White to matt the front and inside panels before adhering DSP - From the Carried Away DSP in the Sale-a-bration catalogue. Melon Mambo, Blushing Bride and Cucumber Crush for the Botanical Blooms Die cuts.

The "for you" sentiment is from the Blooms & Wishes stamp set.

My daughter is not normally fussed by any of my creations but she loved this one. She played with it for quite a while and even showed a friend on snap chat lol So there you go, this one was popular with the Teens.

Sponged Sunset Backgrounds

Tried my hand at sponging sunset scenes again recently. I love playing with my ink pads and sponges,  and it's such an easy technique - I often make these backgrounds with no card in mind, I just pop them away until the right stamp set comes along that needs a sunset lol.

A couple of important things that will ensure your sponging efforts are not just blobs of ink smooched onto paper

• Use card stock that is ideal for blending inks - something with smooth coated surfaces. I use Stampin'Up' Shimmery White card stock as it is great for blending, sponging and light watercolouring. Plus it has a gorgeous shimmer when it catches the light it sparkles 
• Key is to apply light layers and work your way upto the desired depth. 
• Always sponge on to scrap paper after collecting ink on your sponge, yes, every single time you re-ink your sponge, if you don't then you get the yucky blotches. 
• Always use a circular motion when apply sponge to card stock and keep it moving. 
• Always start sponging in circular motions off the card stock, keep motion going as you approach card stock from edges. If masking start with sponge on mask and work your way off it. 

 

The above card was inspired by Kimber Kreations. Her sponging skills are seriously out of this world! I don't have a lot of foliage stamp sets....working on that lol, but used what I had. 

Moon was masked using post it notes and a large circle die. I took the lady from the Beautiful You stamp set and measured where I wanted her in the moon and where her feet landed to gauge where to mask the horizon. Start off by sponging the lightest colour first - Soft Sky around the masked moon.  Then Pool Party, Marina Mist, Dapper Denim and Night of Navy. 

Remove moon mask and lightly sponge the moon with Softy Sky. Take the stark white away with cloud like effects. 

Mask horizon. I used Night of Navy ink and sponged along the mask to create horizon line. Also bring some of the darker ink colours used on the side, down above 

the horizon line you just sponged.

I stamped the lady twice. Once on the card front and the other on the polka dot DSP. Fussy cut the DSP stamped image as close to the stamp line as possible even removing the slightest layer if your skills are on point. Before apply her polka dot fussy cut "dress and hat". Stamp and sponge the foliage. Then glue her clothing onto the stamped lady on the card front. I used a white gel pen to put reflection swirls in the water and for the little details on the plants.

 

This card uses the same technique but with a splash of colour. The sun and horizon were masked at the same time. Then the sun mask was removed and placed directly  underneath the horizon line before sponging the water. Daffodil Delight, Peakaboo Peach and Flirty Flamingo were used to sponge the sun and horizon. Any array of blues can be used for the sea and sky just start with light to dark.

The waves on the water in this card was achieved by taking a small paint brush, lightly spritzing with water and with full fast horizontal strokes run across your inked sea. Better to have brush with minimal water on it as it removes the ink you just applied so becareful.

 

This one uses the same techniques. I wanted to try the Palm Tree idea that Amanda Bates had used for the Avant Garden Flowers as I don't have a Palm tree stamp. It worked a treat. Love getting versatily out of my stamp sets. I then die cut the word "love" from the Sunshine Wishes bundle and replaced the stamped word "smiles" from the sentiment in the Up and Away Bundle.

Sponging, Stamping & Heat Embossing Backgrounds

As my crafting budget is not a lavish one,  I tend to make a lot of my own backgrounds instead of using DSP. They are unique and can be adapted to any ink colours that blend well. 

I start by sponging 2-3 colours on Shimmery White Cardstock. Then using the same ink colours I stamp randomly with sentiments, objects eg cakes, butterflies, shapes etc. Let dry and then heat emboss another set of stamps.

 

This card I have only used two ink colours for the sponging and stamping. Flirty Flamingo and Daffodil Delight. I have stamped off and also stamped the opposite colours onto the sponged areas - just change it up and make it random. The Gorgeous Grunge, Work of Art and Timeless Texture are great sets for this random pattern look. Then, all I've done, is heat embossed in gold one of the flowers from Flower Shop. Sentiment is heat embossed in gold again on vellum and adhered using tombow and a sponge to ensure the glue doesn't show through the vellum.

 

 

The Just for you sentiment is from Watercolour Words and is heat embossed in gold on vellum and cut out using the Layering Ovals Framelits. This card used Flirty Flamingo, Sweet SugarPlum, Wisteria Wonder inks and stamps from Blooms & Wishes, Paisley and Posies, Gorgeous Grunge and the dies were from Botanical Builder Framelits.

 

  

 

My favourite colour combinations for this technique are Flirty Flamingo and Daffodil Delight with gold embossing. I can show these cards as they have already been posted and received by the birthday girls. There was quite a few of us in January, including myself. It was such a joy to receive cards for days around my birthday, plus we all have such different styles and use different Stampin' Up! products, its great to see the items used that you don't own.  

 

Many colour combo's are possible, just blend on scrap first to ensure your two chosen colours don't make an unwanted brown. Below is another favie combo of mine  for this technique - Tempting Turquoise and Daffodil Delight.

The next one I did something a little different. Instead of stamping in the coordinating inks I sponged the background with, this time I used black archival and white craft inks.

 

Crumb Cake and Tempting Turquoise looks lovely when backed with Crumb cake cardstock and gold heat embossed stamps from Paisley and Posies. 

 

This one I used a stencil to create the background, sponging with Flirty Flamingo and Daffodil Delight to achieve a kind of ombre look. Then the smaller panel was cut down and backed with whisper white before adhering to diagonal striped background.
 

The possibilities are limitless. I have made over 40 of these backgrounds, all different and unique as I am using them for a special group of ladies birthday cards. My upline the amazing Sarah Klass, has a fairly sizeable group of Stampin' Up! demonstrators, and we send each other birthday cards. I wanted mine to be different and to use stamps and inks opposed to just dies and embossing folders.
